Translation

Treats lockjaw while it is in the exterior and has not yet entered the interior; take this medicine urgently. Saposhnikovia, notopterygium, pubescent angelica and chuanxiong, 1 don 2 fun 5 ri each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water, and stir So-ogong-san into it and take, with great effect. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs at one weight, and its whole purpose is to be the vehicle for something else: decoct it and stir the minor centipede powder into the liquor. Formulas written to carry other formulas are common in the classical literature and are easy to mistake for weak prescriptions; this one is simply the wind-dispelling base on which the animal drugs were meant to ride. The staging — while still in the exterior, act urgently — is the section's organizing principle again. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
