Clinical commentary 臨床

The last formula of the chapter's lockjaw section and a well-made one: peony at the head to relax the cramping sinew and hold the fluid, atractylodes and licorice to secure the exterior, and pueraria with cimicifuga and scutellaria to clear the heat that is driving the sweat. It is Zhongjing's pueraria decoction with the two sweating drugs taken out, which is exactly the right modification for a patient already sweating to collapse. The connection between fluid loss and cramping sinews, made here and in the two preceding entries, is the soundest physiology in the chapter. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
