Sulphur Decoction

Yuhwang-tang

한글 유황탕  ·  Pinyin Liu Huang Tang

硫黃湯

**External use only.** Ground; 5 don per dose decocted in a bowl of water, and while still warm the affected part is repeatedly fumigated in the steam and washed — and it draws back of itself. **Note on modern practice: pelvic organ prolapse after childbirth should be assessed by an obstetric provider; pelvic floor physical therapy and, where needed, pessary or surgical management are the modern treatments. Sulphur is for external use only.**

Translation

Treats the birth gate not drawing back in after delivery. Sulphur 4 nyang; evodia and cuscuta, 1 nyang 5 don each; cnidium fruit 1 nyang. Grind the above; take 5 don each time, decoct in a bowl of water, and while the decoction is still warm fumigate and wash the affected part repeatedly — and it draws back of itself. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One of the few frankly external formulas in this chapter, and worth having for that reason: it is decocted not to be swallowed but to be sat over, the steam and the wash doing the work. The chapter's surrounding entries for the same complaint are equally practical — sitting over a basin of heated sesame oil, or blowing soap-bean powder into the nose to provoke a sneeze — which tells you how the tradition thought about a prolapse: something to be coaxed and pressed back rather than medicated from within. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
