專治瘟疫, 及一切鬼祟ㆍ伏尸ㆍ勞瘵ㆍ癲狂ㆍ失志ㆍ山嵐瘴氣ㆍ陰陽二毒ㆍ五瘧ㆍ五疳ㆍ八痢ㆍ誤呑銅鐵金石ㆍ藥毒ㆍ不伏水土等證. 川烏(炮) 八錢, 檳榔ㆍ人參ㆍ柴胡ㆍ吳茱萸ㆍ川椒ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ白薑ㆍ黃連ㆍ紫菀ㆍ厚朴ㆍ肉桂ㆍ當歸ㆍ桔梗ㆍ皂角ㆍ石菖蒲 各五錢, 巴豆霜 二錢半. 右擇吉日, 於不聞雞犬處淨室修合, 爲末, 煉蜜和丸梧子大, 朱砂爲衣. 每五丸或七丸, 溫水下. 《入門》 ○此方乃溫白元加檳榔ㆍ當歸也.

Translation

Specifically treats epidemic pestilence, and all cases of ghostly harassment, lurking corpse, taxation consumption, mania and withdrawal, loss of will, miasmic qi of mountain haze, the twin toxins of Yin and Yang, the five malarias, the five infantile gan disorders, the eight dysenteries, the swallowing of copper, iron, gold or stone by mistake, drug poisoning, and failure to agree with the water and soil of a place. Blast-fried aconite from Sichuan, 8 don; areca nut, ginseng, bupleurum, evodia, sichuan pepper, white poria, white ginger, coptis, aster, magnolia bark, cinnamon bark, angelica, platycodon, gleditsia pod and acorus, 5 don each; croton frost, 2 don 5 fun. Choose an auspicious day and compound them in a clean room where neither cock nor dog can be heard; powder them, bind with refined honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and coat them with cinnabar. Five pills, or seven, sent down with warm water. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · On) ○ This prescription is Onbaek-won with areca nut and angelica added.

Clinical commentary 臨床

The leaf names its own parentage in the closing clause: this is the Gukbang’s Onbaek-won with areca nut and angelica added. Against that base it keeps blast-fried aconite as the largest single dose and croton frost as the driver, so the thing is a warm, violent breaker of accumulation that the epidemic chapter has borrowed for pestilence rather than a cooling antitoxic prescription. One difference from the parent is worth noting: where Onbaek-won takes red poria and blast-fried dried ginger, this takes white poria and white ginger. The indication list is the widest in the chapter and should be read for what it is — a catalogue of the fixed, the chronic and the possessing, from mountain miasma to swallowed metal. The compounding instruction belongs to the same register: an auspicious day, and a clean room out of earshot of cocks and dogs. That is ritual, not pharmacy, and the leaf keeps it because the two were not separated. **Contains aconite and croton frost, both acutely toxic, and the pills are coated with cinnabar (mercury).
