Numinous Spirit Paste

Yeongsin-go

한글 영신고  ·  Pinyin Ling Shen Gao

靈神膏

The id takes the chapter tail because 寧神膏, the postpartum formula from 入門 registered in 婦人門, romanises onto the same reading and already holds the bare `yeongsin-go`. The two are unrelated formulas with different names. — A collation note, `䧺 : 雄 (First Edition)`, falls inside this leaf at the page boundary, but 䧺 does not occur anywhere in this leaf; it annotates 䧺黃 in the preceding 保幼化風丹 leaf. 䧺 and 雄 are in any case the same glyph and nothing in the reading changes.

Translation

Red poria-spirit and cinnabar, 1 nyang each; ophiopogon 5 don; musk 2 don 5 fun. Powder them, bind with honey and make small cakes; take one cake at bedtime, dissolved down in mint decoction — the effect is remarkable. ○ There was an old physician of a paediatric house in its third generation; the family tradition held only four or five drugs, and he cured disease without number. He held that when a child convulses it is mostly a heat pattern, and that one should not reach straight for the fright-wind drugs — only give Dojeok-san 導赤散 — the formula is given in the Five Viscera chapter — with siler and bamboo leaf decocted together, two or three packets, to draw the evil heat out of the Heart channel; the convulsion then stops at once, and Yeongsin-go is given next. — Jibyeom 集驗 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs, two of them in nyang quantities, made into small sweet cakes and given at bedtime. The composition is almost nothing but cinnabar: 1 nyang of it against 1 nyang of poria-spirit, with ophiopogon to moisten and 2 don 5 fun of musk. **Contains cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide, at the highest proportion of any leaf in this section, and the patient is a child for whom the text gives no dose by weight. This must not be prepared or given.** The musk is from a CITES Appendix I animal. The interesting part of the leaf is not the formula but the paragraph after it. An old paediatrician in the third generation of his house, working from four or five drugs, held that a convulsing child is usually simply hot — that one should not reach for the fright-wind drugs at all, but cool the Heart channel with 導赤散 plus siler and bamboo leaf, after which the convulsion stops on its own. That is very close to being right, and it is the best clinical sentence in 急驚風: a febrile seizure stops by itself, and bringing the fever down is the whole of what can usefully be done. The irony is that the paste he recommends giving next is half cinnabar. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
