Translation

Treats mania and withdrawal long uncured, arising from fright and worry — this being phlegm-drool lodged in the orifices of the Heart. Cicada-belly turmeric root 7 nyang; clear alum 3 nyang. Powder the pair and bind with a thin paste into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 50 pills with any warm liquid. On first taking it, something within the chest region comes away and the spirit Qi is refreshed; taken long, one comes to peace. It is greatly able to remove phlegm. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two herbs for a condition the chapter otherwise treats with fourteen — turmeric root to open, alum to strip. What makes the entry memorable is its description of the effect rather than its composition: *on first taking it, something within the chest comes away.* Patients with long-standing constraint sometimes describe exactly that sensation, and the formulary evidently thought it worth recording as the sign that the medicine had reached its target. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
