Translation

Treats sudden stroke with loss of consciousness; blown into the nose it revives at once. Gypsum, 2 don; veratrum, chuanxiong, asarum, ginseng and licorice, 4 fun each. Powder; take one ja each time and blow it into the nose, then pull up the hair at the crown of the head, and the patient revives. If there is sneezing the case can be treated; if there is no sneezing it cannot. — Danggye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The prognostic clause is the valuable part: if there is sneezing the case can be treated, if there is no sneezing it cannot. That is a brainstem reflex test, and the tradition was using it the way a modern clinician uses a corneal or gag reflex — as a crude measure of how deep the depression of consciousness goes. The formula itself is an irritant powder built around veratrum, which is a violent emetic and sternutatory and genuinely dangerous; the dose given is a pinch into the nose, not a draught, and the whole intervention lasts seconds. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
