Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治水腫, 小便絶少. 地龍(生硏)ㆍ猪苓ㆍ甘遂ㆍ鍼砂各五錢. 右爲末, 擂葱涎調成膏, 敷臍中約一寸, 以絹帛束之, 以小便多爲度, 日兩易之. 《得效》

Translation

Treats water swelling with urine almost entirely stopped. Earthworm (raw, ground), polyporus, kansui and needle filings 5 don each. Powder them, grind scallion into a mucilage and work it into a paste, spread it over the navel about one chon across, and bind with silk. Abundant urine is the measure; change it twice a day. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Milder than the cake above and aimed at the urine rather than the stool. Earthworm and kansui are both used elsewhere in the chapter as internal diuretics; here they are applied over the bladder region with scallion mucilage as the vehicle, which at least puts them where the action is wanted. **Kansui is toxic and absorbed through skin. Not suitable for use. Urine that has almost stopped is an emergency — acute kidney injury and obstruction must be excluded.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
