治表中虛熱, 遇夜則甚. 黃芪一錢三分, 柴胡一錢, 甘草(生)ㆍ黃連(酒炒)ㆍ黃芩ㆍ赤芍藥ㆍ地骨皮ㆍ生地黃ㆍ蒼朮各七分, 當歸身ㆍ升麻各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats vacuous heat within the exterior, worse when night comes on. Astragalus 1 don 3 fun; bupleurum 1 don; raw licorice, wine-fried coptis, scutellaria, red peony, lycium root bark, raw rehmannia, and atractylodes, 7 fun each; angelica body and cimicifuga, 5 fun each. Cut the above, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indication pins the timing precisely — vacuous heat in the exterior, worse as night comes on — which by this chapter's own rule places the heat in the Yin aspect and calls for Blood-cooling rather than Qi-clearing. Dongyuan's signature is in the two ends: astragalus at the head and cimicifuga at the foot, lifting a depleted surface even while the coolers work, on the reading that heat lodged in the exterior of an empty person is there because nothing is holding it out. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
