Taemu Divine Atractylodes Powder

Taemusinchul-san

한글 태무신출산  ·  Pinyin Tai Wu Shen Zhu San

太無神朮散

The variant clause ends 名曰神朮散氣散 in the transcription; 氣散 after the formula name appears to be a dittography, the variant being named simply 神朮散, and the translation reads it so. The 神朮散 of that clause is not the same formula as the three already registered under that name.

Translation

Treats the pestilence of the four seasons, and is a marvellous formula directed above all at the miasmic qi of mountain mists. Atractylodes lancea 3 don; tangerine peel and magnolia bark 2 don each; acorus, agastache and licorice 1 don each. Cut the above up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · On) ○ Another version has no acorus and has cyperus 1 don, and is called Divine Atractylodes Powder. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Calm the Stomach Powder with acorus and agastache in place of the usual pairings — atractylodes lancea, tangerine peel, magnolia bark and licorice are that base exactly, and the two additions are what turn it toward this chapter. Acorus and agastache are the Bogam's aromatics for opening a blocked middle and for the kind of damp that is held to come in through the nose, which is precisely how the 瘴疫 section says the mountain mists get in. That makes it the most reasonable prescription in the section: no minerals, no aconite, nothing worn or burnt, and a drug list that would be recognised today as a warming aromatic formula for a damp-type gastroenteric fever. The leaf claims the pestilence of all four seasons for it and then narrows to the miasmic qi of mountain mists, which is the narrower claim and the better one. The variant at the foot drops the acorus for a don of cyperus and takes the name Divine Atractylodes Powder, which the Bogam already carries in other transmissions with different drugs; this one is recorded here as the variant and not separately. There is nothing hazardous in the formula. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
