Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-five drugs, and not one of them is swallowed. Eight nyang of atractylodes lancea heads a list that runs through the whole aromatic and wind-dispelling pharmacy — notopterygium, siler, pubescent angelica, ligusticum, angelica dahurica, schizonepeta, nardostachys, sand ginger — with both aconites, dried ginger and ephedra for heat, coptis and arnebia for the opposite, and three don and a half of musk at the end to carry the smell. Bound with steamed jujube flesh into bullet-sized pills, it is burnt one pill at a time. The chapter's reasoning is visible in the choice: these are the drugs the Bogam uses when it wants a smell strong enough to shift the air of a room, and the preventive section just before this one says plainly that the sickness of a pestilent house arises as a foul qi that is smelled and so passes on. Fumigating a dwelling is the answer that follows from that premise. It is also, read with modern eyes, the one warding method in the section that might incidentally have done something, by driving people to open the doors and burn out a closed room — the Deukhyo text a few leaves earlier says to open the doors first. **Contains both chuanwu and caowu aconite, which are toxic, and musk from a protected species. Burning aconite and breathing the smoke is its own hazard, and this must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
