Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治內傷, 脾胃虛冷, 腹中痞痛, 或腸鳴, 自利, 不思飮食. 蒼朮ㆍ桔梗ㆍ乾薑(炮)ㆍ甘草(灸) 各一兩. 右爲末, 蜜丸彈子大. 沸湯嚼下一丸. 《局方》

Translation

Treats internal damage with the spleen and stomach vacuous and cold, glomus pain within the abdomen, rumbling intestines, spontaneous diarrhoea, and no desire for food. Atractylodes lancea, platycodon, dry ginger (blast-fried) and licorice (mix-fried) 1 nyang each. Powder them and make honey pills the size of a bullet; chew one down with boiling water. — Hwaje Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Naesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four medicinals at equal weight, and platycodon is the surprise — it lifts and opens the lung, which in a formula for cold diarrhoea works by raising what has sunk rather than by warming.
