Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治癰瘡熱毒腫痛. 黃連ㆍ黃栢ㆍ白芨ㆍ白斂各四錢, 雄黃一錢, 乳香ㆍ沒藥各五分. 右末, 水調, 雞羽掃上腫處. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats abscess sores with heat toxin, swelling and pain. Coptis, phellodendron, bletilla and ampelopsis root, 4 don each; realgar 1 don; frankincense and myrrh, 5 fun each. Powder them, stir into water, and with a chicken feather sweep it over the swollen place. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A thin water paste, not a greasy plaster: the two bitter yellows carry it, bletilla and ampelopsis root thicken and bind it to the skin, and frankincense and myrrh are the pair the chapter adds to almost everything for pain. It is brushed on with a feather, which is the detail that tells you how it was meant to go — a wash of colour over the whole red area rather than a dressing packed into a wound. This is the first of the chapter's surface applications and the lightest. It is for the stage before pus, when the swelling is hot and tense and the hope is still that it will go down rather than open. **Contains realgar, an arsenic sulphide, which is absorbed through inflamed and broken skin.
