Translation

Treats yang toxin with great heat and raving mania that cannot be subdued. Take five or six cheok of blue cloth, fold it over, soak it in newly drawn water and lay it on the patient's chest. After a while it steams hot; soak it in water again and lay it on again, and changing it dozens of times a day is best. Another method: boil a pan of mung bean decoction, let it cool a little, dip several thicknesses of blue cloth in it and lay it on the chest and diaphragm; when it cools, dip it again and lay it on, changing it dozens of times a day, keeping him covered with bedding, and with the sweating there is recovery. For mung bean and blue cloth are cool in nature and can make the heat retreat. — Uibang Yuchwi 得效 · Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The best thing in the yang toxin section, because it is simply right: cold wet cloths on the trunk, changed as soon as they warm, dozens of times a day. Conductive and evaporative cooling applied to the chest is how hyperthermia is treated now, and the detail that makes the entry convincing is the one about the cloth steaming hot — somebody watched it happen and understood that the heat was being carried away. The second method with mung bean decoction adds nothing pharmacologically and the explanation offered for it is wrong, but the procedure is unchanged. The instruction to keep the patient covered works against the cooling and is the one part to drop. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
