Dispersing Water Toxin Drink

Sosudok-eumja

한글 소수독음자  ·  Pinyin Xiao Shui Du Yin Zi

消水毒飮子

The leaf gives the composition only; the indication is in the prose immediately above it at 2.9.40 水毒, which ends 身體發赤癍者水毒, 又消水毒飮子並主之 — the one whose body breaks out in red blotches has water toxin, and this drink governs it as well. A collation note at the foot of 028b, 附 : 聞(First Edition), annotates 能聼在水中附人聲 in that prose, not anything in this leaf, and has not been acted on.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

吳茱萸 半升, 生薑ㆍ犀角ㆍ升麻ㆍ陳皮 各一兩, 烏梅 七箇. 右剉, 水七椀, 煎至二椀, 分二服. 《入門》

Translation

Evodia fruit half a seung; fresh ginger, rhinoceros horn, cimicifuga and tangerine peel, 1 nyang each; and seven mume fruits. Cut them up, and in seven bowls of water decoct down to two bowls, to be taken in two doses. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haedok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A large dose of 吳茱萸, evodia, with ginger and tangerine peel warming and dispersing, against 犀角 and 升麻 resolving toxin and cooling, and 烏梅 sour to gather. The balance is unusual for the chapter — most of these leaves are cold or they are poisons — and it answers the picture the prose draws: 寒熱悶亂, 頭目俱痛, chills and fever with oppression, confusion and pain in the head and eyes. The 射工 and 溪溫 of the prose are the Bogam's names for something contracted in standing fresh water, told apart by whether a sore appears, and its 沙虱 — a mite from the river sand that leaves a puncture like a needle hole with a five-coloured ring round it — is a recognizable description of mite-borne fever, which is to say scrub typhus. That is treated with doxycycline and is dangerous untreated; nothing here touches it. **Contains rhinoceros horn, from a CITES-protected animal, which must not be sourced. 吳茱萸 half a seung is a large dose of a hot, acrid drug and is not safe to take.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
