Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治腰痛不可忍. 川練肉(以巴豆肉五粒同炒赤, 去巴豆)ㆍ茴香(鹽炒)ㆍ破故紙(炒) 各一兩. 右爲末, 每一錢, 空心, 以熱酒調下. 《入門》

Translation

Treats lumbar pain that cannot be borne. Toosendan flesh — fried to red together with five croton kernels, the croton then discarded — salt-fried fennel, and dry-fried psoralea, 1 nyang each. Powder the above; take 1 don on an empty stomach, stirred into hot wine. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Yo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three ingredients for pain that cannot be borne, and the croton processing is the point of interest: five kernels are fried with the toosendan until it reddens and are then thrown away. The croton never enters the dose — it only changes the toosendan.
