Immortals' Never-Old Pill

Sinseonbulro-hwan

한글 신선불로환  ·  Pinyin Shen Xian Bu Lao Wan

神仙不老丸

Pill formula, bulk amounts: the medicinals are cut and slow-fire-baked (never sun-dried), pounded to fine powder, worked with honey through a thousand pestle-strokes into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; 70–90 pills three times daily — early morning, noon, and at bedtime — with warm wine or salted water. Forbidden while taking: the three whites (scallion, garlic, radish per the received reading) and all blood foods. The source carries the formula as a verse: 'The Never-Old immortal formula's power is rare — it holds the countenance with no effort at all… it can make the beard black and the hair black too.'

Translation

The song runs: 'The Never-Old immortal formula's power is rare — it holds the countenance with no effort at all. Ginseng, achyranthes, Sichuan morinda, Shu-land angelica, and eucommia together; the one flavor rehmannia, used raw and prepared; cuscuta, arborvitae seed, and acorus; add further the lycium — bark together with fruit. Fine-powdered, honey-bound, pills like parasol seeds; taken thrice — early, at noon, and nearing sleep — with salted water or warm wine as you please. Forbid the three whites and every blood food, and it can make the beard black and the hair black too.' — Ginseng, morinda (wine-soaked and cored), Korean angelica (wine-soaked), and cuscuta (wine-prepared), 3 nyang each; prepared rehmannia and dried raw rehmannia (wine-baked), 2 nyang each; achyranthes (wine-soaked) and eucommia (bran-fried), 1.5 nyang each; arborvitae seed (powdered separately), acorus (rice-water-soaked), lycium fruit (wine-soaked), and lycium root bark, 1 nyang each. Cut the above — it must not be sun-dried — bake only over a slow fire, pound to fine powder, work with honey through a thousand pestle-strokes into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds. Take 70–90 pills each time with warm wine or salted water, three times daily. Forbidden: the three whites and all blood foods. — Yangro 養老 (Donguibogam · Heoro)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A prescription that ships as a song — dosage schedule, herb list, and dietary taboos all rhymed for memory, the Yangro's bet that a daily medicine survives only if the patient can sing it. The pharmacology beneath the verse is sober: the chapter's blood-and-essence core with acorus to keep the senses bright. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
