Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治陰證傷寒在表經者. 人參ㆍ白朮ㆍ白芍藥各二錢, 白茯苓ㆍ當歸各一錢, 細辛ㆍ麻黃各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 棗二枚, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats the yin pattern of cold damage lodged in the exterior channels. Ginseng, atractylodes and white peony, 2 don each; poria and tangkuei, 1 don each; asarum and ephedra, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The proportion is the whole formula: five drugs of support at one and two don against asarum and ephedra at five fun each. A yin-pattern patient with an exterior evil cannot be sweated without collapsing, so the exterior drugs are reduced to a tenth of the total and the rest is there to make the sweating survivable. That is the correct answer to the problem and it is the same principle as Mahwang-buja-gamcho-tang reached by a different route — support first, open second. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
