Translation

Treats yang depletion in which no sweat can be obtained, called the yang collapse pattern. Ginseng, astragalus, cinnamon twig, blast-fried aconite, asarum, notopterygium, saposhnikovia, chuanxiong and roasted licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ash-roasted ginger and two dates, decoct down to half, then add 1 don of parched peony, bring to a boil two or three times more and take warm. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Tao Hua's best-known formula and the clearest statement of a principle the Bogam returns to often: a patient with no yang cannot be sweated, so supply the yang and the sweat follows. Ginseng, astragalus and aconite are the engine; the surface-opening drugs — cinnamon twig, asarum, notopterygium, saposhnikovia — are there to be driven by it. The peony is added late, off a half-reduced decoction, and parched: a sour, inward-turning drug put in at the end to stop the sweat from running away once it starts. That sequencing is the craft of the formula. Still used, with the aconite properly processed, for the febrile illness that an elderly patient cannot mount a response to. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
