Translation

White atractylodes 2 don 5 fun; blast-fried dried ginger and red poria, 1 don 5 fun each; roasted licorice 5 fun. Cut the above, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Yo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Zhang Zhongjing's formula, and one of the most elegant in the canon: four herbs, none of which touch the Kidney at all. That is deliberate — the cold damp has lodged in the tissues *around* the organ, not in the organ, so the treatment warms and drains the region and leaves the Kidney alone. Anyone tempted to give Kidney tonics for this presentation has misread it, which is why the chapter takes care to describe what is *normal* in this patient: no thirst, normal urine, normal appetite. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
