Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治産後發熱, 不因亡血ㆍ蓄血ㆍ傷食ㆍ蒸乳四證, 外果係風寒表證, 則用此. 當歸三錢, 川芎一錢半, 柴胡ㆍ人參各一錢, 半夏ㆍ陳皮ㆍ防風各八分, 甘草五分. 右剉作一貼, 入薑三片, 棗二枚, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats fever after delivery where it is not owing to the four patterns of blood loss, amassed blood, food damage or steaming breasts, but genuinely belongs outside to an exterior pattern of wind cold — then this is used. Angelica 3 don; chuanxiong 1 don 5 pun; bupleurum and ginseng 1 don each; pinellia, tangerine peel and saposhnikovia 8 pun each; licorice 5 pun. Clinical commentary 臨床

Four causes of postpartum fever are named and excluded before the fifth is accepted — blood loss, amassed blood, food damage, and the breasts coming into milk. Only when all four are ruled out is the fever treated as a contraction. That is a differential list of the kind the chapter rarely spells out, and it is the section's most useful line.
