Raise the Yang and Boost the Stomach Powder

Seungyangigwi-san

한글 승양익위산  ·  Pinyin Sheng Yang Yi Wei San

升陽益胃散

癕, 𤍠, 隂, 温, 蘓 and 畧 are given above as 癰, 熱, 陰, 溫, 蘇 and 略. 灸 for the roasted licorice is the form this corpus prints throughout, and 卧 is printed as the transcription has it. Licorice appears twice in the leaf, roasted at 1 don 5 fun and raw at 1 don, and is recorded twice above with the preparation distinguishing them, as the corpus does elsewhere. 當歸梢 is registered under 當歸, with the part named in the prep. The alternative name 復煎散 given here is not Naetakbokjeon-san 內托復煎散, which is a different prescription in this chapter; the 河間 passage in the method leaf uses the short name for that one. 升陽益胃湯 in the Internal Damage chapter is a separate formula.

Translation

Treats the brain-sore, the abscess of the back and every kind of malign sore; it is able to express from within. Forsythia, 2 don; notopterygium, ligusticum, astragalus and roasted licorice, 1 don 5 fun each; anemarrhena, raw rehmannia, scutellaria, platycodon and raw licorice, 1 don each; alisma, 7 fun; pubescent angelica, saposhnikovia, coptis, phellodendron, ginseng, aged tangerine peel, the tips of Korean angelica, sappanwood and wine-processed cocculus root, 5 fun each. Cut the above and make two packets. For each packet, take 2 large cups of water, steep for half a day, decoct down to one cup, drip in a few dozen drops of wine, remove the dregs, and take it warm at bedtime; drinking water is to be avoided for three days. Taken thus it disperses the swelling at once, and where pus is forming it opens at once. This formula is seven parts yang drugs to three parts yin, and surpasses Sipseon-san. Also called Bokjeon-san; adding frankincense and myrrh, 1 don each, is better still. — Dongwon 東垣. This formula is roughly the same as Hwangryeonsodok-san. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Dongwon's own note at the foot of the leaf tells you what this is: roughly the same prescription as Hwangryeonsodok-san. Set the two side by side and it holds — the three yellows, raw rehmannia, anemarrhena, notopterygium, pubescent angelica, ligusticum, saposhnikovia, platycodon, cocculus root, alisma, sappanwood, aged tangerine peel, ginseng, licorice and Korean angelica are in both, with forsythia promoted to chief here at 2 don and the weights rearranged. The accounting sentence, seven parts yang drugs to three parts yin, is Dongwon's way of saying the prescription leans to the raising and opening drugs rather than the cold ones, and the boast that it surpasses Sipseon-san is a direct comparison to the leading formula of the chapter's supporting arm. The name sits on the 內托 side — 能內托, able to express from within — and the leaf earns it with astragalus, ginseng, roasted licorice and Korean angelica tips, which supplement so the swelling is driven outward. But the bulk of the prescription drains heat, which is why it reads as a hinge between the chapter's two arms rather than a pure member of either: not the 疏 and 利 group carrying the toxin down out of a repleted body with rhubarb, and not the plain tonic expressing powders either. The preparation is distinctive and worth noting — steeped half a day before decocting, a few dozen drops of wine at the end, taken warm at bedtime, and no drinking water for three days afterward. Two name traps sit in this leaf. 一名復煎散 is not Naetakbokjeon-san, and 升陽益胃湯 in the Internal Damage chapter is a different prescription, though it shares astragalus, ginseng, notopterygium, pubescent angelica, saposhnikovia, aged tangerine peel, alisma, coptis and licorice with this one and plainly comes from the same workshop. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
