Translation

Treats heat in the face. Cimicifuga and dried pueraria 1 don each; angelica dahurica 7 pun; white peony and licorice 5 pun each; coptis (wine-fried) 4 pun; rhinoceros horn shavings, chuanxiong, schizonepeta spike and mint 3 pun each. Cut up; first steep the chuanxiong, schizonepeta and mint in half a jan of water, and make the rest into one packet boiled in two jan of water down to one; then add the three steeped medicinals and boil again to seven parts, strain and take warm after food. Avoid wine, wheat food and the five pungent things. — Wigye Bogam 寶鑑 (Donguibogam · Myeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The three volatile medicinals are steeped cold and added at the end so their aroma is not boiled away — the chapter's one piece of careful decoction technique. Seungma-galgeun-tang is the base, and 2.7.4 says so outright: the same formula answers a hot face one way and a cold face the other. **Rhinoceros horn is from a CITES Appendix I species and is banned; it must be omitted.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
