Clinical commentary 臨床

For wind malaria at its first onset and, by the chapter's own division of that section, for the case with no sweat — the sweating case goes to Jeonggi-tang and the undecided case to Mahwangbaekchul-tang. Eight drugs at 1 don with licorice at 5 fun, and every one of the eight reaches the surface: cnidium, angelica dahurica, ephedra, saposhnikovia, schizonepeta, perilla leaf and notopterygium, with white peony alone holding anything back. The preparation is the part worth keeping. The decoction is made, left out overnight in the dew, and taken warm at first light, which places the dose squarely before the hour the attack is expected. The dew-exposure is a method, not an ingredient, and the same step appears in this chapter's Nogang-eum and Nogangyangwi-tang, where the character 露 in the formula name refers to it. Three stalks of scallion white rather than ginger alone push the formula further toward the surface still. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
