Translation

The urine comes white and thick as rice-washing water, dozens of times a day, the mind absent and bewildered, the body wasted and worn — this is got by sexual taxation. Mantis egg-case (steamed with salt water), polygala (prepared with ginger), acorus (stir-fried with salt), dragon bone, ginseng, poria-with-wood, tangkuei (washed in wine) and turtle carapace (roasted with vinegar), 5 jeon each; roasted licorice 2 jeon 5 pun. Powder them, and take 2 jeon at bedtime stirred into a decoction of ginseng, poria and mulberry root bark. The mulberry bark moves the water, and the sense of it is that it carries the mantis egg-case home to the kidney channel. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Sobyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The vehicle is the point. The powder is taken in a decoction of ginseng, poria and mulberry root bark rather than in water, and the Jikji says why: 桑皮行水, 接螵蛸歸腎經 — the mulberry bark moves the water and so carries the mantis egg-case down to the kidney channel. It is the clearest statement in the chapter of what a vehicle was thought to do. 小便白如稠米泔, 日數十次 — milky urine passed dozens of times a day, with wasting. Persistently milky urine in that quantity is chyluria, which in this region meant filariasis, or heavy proteinuria; 瘦瘁 fits either. The chapter reads it as essence leaving by the wrong road, which is not a bad description of what protein in the urine is. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
