Translation

Treats cold damage beyond the fourteenth day where the residual heat has not cleared, with thirst or vexation, inability to rest, no desire for food, stool that does not pass freely and dark yellow urine; this is a ruined pattern. Fresh rehmannia, 1 don 5 fun; ginseng, bupleurum, peony, scutellaria, anemarrhena and ophiopogon, 1 don each; bitter orange, 8 fun; licorice, 3 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and decoct in water. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A fortnight of fever leaves two problems at once — heat that has not gone and fluids that have — and this formula treats both without choosing. Fresh rehmannia and ophiopogon replace what was lost, anemarrhena and scutellaria clear what remains, bupleurum lifts out the fragment still caught in the shaoyang, and ginseng holds up a patient who cannot eat. Bitter orange at a small dose for the stool that will not pass. It is a convalescent formula rather than an acute one, and the sign that marks the moment for it is the patient who is no longer very ill but cannot settle, sleep or eat. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
