Translation

Treats ruined cold damage. Where a long time has passed since the cold damage resolved and the spirit is unsettled and the speech confused, or there is tidal fever, flushed cheeks and chill and heat like malaria, it is in every case because the sweating or purging was not carried through and toxin has lodged in the pericardial space. Anemarrhena, 3 don; ephedra, red peony, scutellaria, cinnamon heartwood and roasted licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water; a slight sweat and the patient is cured. — Immun 入門 ○ One edition removes the cinnamon heartwood and substitutes cinnamon twig. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han, lower)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Bogam's diagnosis here is worth the whole entry: a patient left confused and feverish weeks after the acute illness, and the cause given as treatment that stopped halfway — the sweat never completed, the purge never finished, and what was left behind lodged where the text puts it, in the pericardial space. Anemarrhena at triple dose cools that residue; ephedra with cinnamon opens a last light sweat to carry it out. The variant reading matters in practice: cinnamon twig suits the exterior, cinnamon heartwood the interior, and which one an edition chose tells you how its compiler read the pattern. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
