Ginseng and Tangkuei Nourish the Construction Decoction

Samgwi-yangyeong-tang

한글 삼귀양영탕  ·  Pinyin Shen Gui Yang Rong Tang

參歸養榮湯

The Bogam carries two different formulas under the name 參歸養榮湯: this one, from the Haehak chapter, for regulating and nourishing the qi and blood once a malaria has been cut off, while the Pung chapter's Hoechun formula of the same name treats wind phlegm tetany and yin tetany. The source marker is printed 囬春 for 回春.

Translation

After a malaria has been cut off and stopped, use this to regulate and nourish the qi and blood. Ginseng, white atractylodes, white poria, Korean angelica, tangerine peel, amomum, magnolia bark, dioscorea, lotus seed, white peony, prepared rehmannia and licorice, 8 fun each. Cut the above, make one packet, add two jujubes, and decoct in water and take. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Palmul-tang with its cnidium removed — ginseng, white atractylodes, white poria and licorice on one side, Korean angelica, white peony and prepared rehmannia on the other — and then tangerine peel, amomum and magnolia bark added to keep the middle moving under all that richness, with dioscorea and lotus seed to hold it. Dropping cnidium is deliberate: this is not a formula meant to move anything outward. Twelve drugs at eight fun each is a light dose, and the even weighting says the same thing the indication does. It is placed at the close of the chapter, after the dichroa formulas, and it is the one entry here that treats the patient rather than the fit: 瘧疾截住後 — once the malaria has been cut off. Two jujubes and no ginger, which keeps even the envoys mild. The modern reading is straightforward and is about the only one in this chapter that holds up. A patient recovering from a long relapsing fever is depleted and eats badly, and a gentle spleen-and-blood formula is reasonable supportive care — but it is convalescent care, not treatment of the infection, and the infection is what needs the antimalarial drug. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
