Powder, make pills with wine paste the size of a paulownia seed, and take a hundred on an empty stomach in salt water. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's largest pill and the one with the most elaborate processing: eight nyang of atractylodes divided in four and prepared four different ways — salt water for the kidney, rice-water to temper, vinegar to astringe, scallion to disperse — so that a single drug is made to work in four directions at once. Whether that is pharmacologically real is doubtful; as a piece of craft it is the high point of the chapter's preparation technique. The rest is a kidney-and-spleen tonic of the usual kind, aimed at a patient who has been loose for years rather than at an episode. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
