Translation

Stops cough, disperses phlegm and brings fire down. The juice of snow pear, of lotus root, of fresh radish and of fresh mint, in equal parts; stir in sugar crystals until even, boil down over a slow fire to a paste, and take it a spoonful at a time. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four juices and sugar boiled down to a syrup and taken from a spoon: this is a cough syrup in the literal sense, and it is the only thing in the whole chapter that a modern reader could make and use as written. Pear and lotus root are the tradition's moistening pair for a dry throat, radish cuts the phlegm, mint cools and numbs. Pear syrup for a cough is still made at home in Korea and sold in pharmacies, and 梨汁 with sugar is the base of most of those preparations. The formula has outlived the chapter around it for the reason that it works at the level it claims — it soothes a dry irritable cough and makes no larger promise. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
