Raw-Ingredient Four Substances Decoction for Sores in Children

Saengnyosamul-tang

한글 생료사물탕  ·  Pinyin Sheng Liao Si Wu Tang

生料四物湯

治同上 points back to 大連翹飮, the leaf immediately above, so the indication is that one's — 治諸瘡 — and the section head sends both to the same place. No entry of this name existed in the database, and the corpus carries 生料 in only three other places.

Translation

Treats the same as the preceding. Raw rehmannia, red peony, cnidium, Korean angelica and siler, 3 fun each; scutellaria and mint, 2 fun each. Cut the above and make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is 四物湯 with both of its building drugs exchanged for their cooling counterparts and a wind trio added. The classical base is prepared rehmannia, white peony, cnidium and Korean angelica, and it builds blood; here raw rehmannia stands in for the prepared root and red peony for the white, which turns the same four drugs from a blood-builder into a blood-cooler, and then siler, scutellaria and mint are added to take the heat off the surface. 生料, raw ingredients, is the name of exactly that substitution. The weights are the same order as its companion — 3 fun and 2 fun, roughly a gram a drug. It is sent to the same illness: impetigo, infected eczema and the itching eruptions of childhood. The honest reading is the same as well. Cooling the blood does not clear a bacterial skin infection; antibiotics did, and for the itching ones permethrin did. What this formula has over its neighbours in the chapter is that **nothing in it is poisonous** — seven ordinary plant drugs and no mineral at all — and that matters in a chapter where the next section begins handing cinnabar to well children. **The leaf gives no dose by weight here**, only one packet for a child of any age. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
