Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治七氣凝結, 狀如破絮, 或如梅核, 窒碍咽喉, 咯不出, 嚥不下. 或胸膈痞滿, 痰涎壅盛. 半夏(製) 二錢, 赤茯苓一錢六分, 厚朴(製) 一錢二分, 紫蘇葉八分. 右剉, 薑七片, 棗二枚, 煎服. 《局方》

Translation

Treats the seven qi congealed and bound, like torn cotton wadding or a plum stone, obstructing the throat so that it can be neither hawked out nor swallowed down; or glomus and fullness of the chest and diaphragm with phlegm and drool congested and abundant. Pinellia (processed) 2 don; red poria 1 don 6 pun; magnolia bark (processed) 1 don 2 pun; perilla leaf 8 pun. Cut up, add 7 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct and take. — Hwaje Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Gi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

梅核 — the plum stone — is the tradition's name for the lump in the throat that is felt and not found, that cannot be coughed up or swallowed, and this is the formula the whole tradition gives for it. Zhongjing's Banhahubak-tang under another name, with the four medicinals that make it — pinellia, magnolia, poria, perilla — in the same proportions. The condition is globus, and it is still the commonest presentation of anxiety to a throat clinic. The formula is still the first prescription for it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
