Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治寒喘. 麻黃二錢, 五味子ㆍ杏仁ㆍ橘紅各一錢半, 乾生薑ㆍ桂皮ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 紫蘇三葉, 煎服. 《直指》

Translation

Treats cold panting. Ephedra, 2 don; schisandra, apricot kernel and red tangerine peel, 1 don 5 fun each; dried fresh ginger, cinnamon bark and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add three perilla leaves, and decoct. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ephedra opens and schisandra holds — the two chiefs pull against each other, which is the whole design. In a wheeze provoked by cold, dispersing alone leaves the lung qi spent, so the sour astringent is given in nearly the same weight as the disperser, with dried ginger and cinnamon bark warming beneath them. **Contains ephedra, a sympathomimetic that raises blood pressure and heart rate and interacts with many drugs.
