Clinical commentary 臨床

Mahaenggamseok-tang — ephedra, apricot kernel, gypsum, licorice — with mulberry root bark and tea added, and it is the classical formula for a wheeze that is hot rather than cold: the gypsum outweighs the ephedra, so the formula opens the airway while cooling the lung. The tea is not decoration; it was used for its own effect on the breath, and caffeine is a bronchodilator. **Ephedra is a sympathomimetic and is contraindicated in hypertension and heart disease. Acute severe breathlessness is an emergency.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
