Clinical commentary 臨床

An external application and the only one in the joint sections, which makes it the safest thing here: sixteen aromatic and warming drugs coarsely powdered, stir-fried with a pint of salt until very hot, bagged in silk and pressed on the painful joint, reheated when it cools. Salt holds heat well and releases it slowly, and the volatile constituents of the pepper, evodia and galangal come off into the skin as it cools. That is a sound hot compress, and the aconite and scorpion in it matter far less by this route than they would by mouth. Still, a hot bag at this temperature will burn thin or insensate skin. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
