Translation

Treats epidemic toxin with lumps, the head and face swollen in flood, the throat stopped up so that neither water nor medicine will go down. Indigo leaf and scrophularia, 2 nyang each; rhaponticum, cimicifuga, rhubarb and scutellaria, 1 nyang each. Make a coarse powder; 3 don to a dose, decocted in water and taken slowly. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · On)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Six drugs, coarsely powdered and decocted three don at a time, with indigo leaf and scrophularia at double weight in front. Indigo leaf is the tradition’s cooling antitoxic for rashes and epidemic heat, and rhaponticum — the drug that gives the name — is its specific for a toxic swelling that has gone hard. Rhubarb and scutellaria drain; cimicifuga lifts the action to the head. 疙瘩 is the word the leaf uses, and it means lumps raised in the skin rather than a smooth swelling. With 水藥不下 — not even water going down — this is the most alarming presentation in the chapter, and the prescription answers it by being thin and taken slowly rather than by being strong. **A throat stopped up so that water will not pass is an airway emergency and needs immediate hospital care.** The leaf is a record of what was available before that was possible. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
