Translation

Treats beard and hair yellow or white and without lustre. Chalcanthite, Chinese gall, fermented gall preparation, green walnut husk, sour pomegranate rind, chebula rind, Chinese quince rind, gleditsia pod, fleeceflower root, and asarum in equal parts. Powder the above and mix with honey into cakes the size of a coin; keep them banked in charcoal at all times and do not let them leave the charcoal. When using, dissolve in hot wine and apply. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Chemically this is a real dye rather than a tonic, and it is worth understanding as one. Six of the ten ingredients are tannin sources — Chinese gall, fermented gall, walnut husk, pomegranate rind, chebula, quince rind — and chalcanthite is copper sulfate, the mordant that fixes tannin as a dark complex on the hair shaft. The same chemistry underlies traditional iron-and-gall inks. Copper sulfate is toxic on absorption and should not be applied to skin; the preparation is recorded as documented. The instruction to keep the cakes banked in charcoal is a drying and oxidation control, and the text is emphatic that they must never leave it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
