Translation

Treats yellowed and dry beard and hair, able to make them black and moist. Sweet chrysanthemum, vitex fruit, arborvitae leaf, cnidium, angelica dahurica, asarum, mulberry root bark, and eclipta (root, stem, flower and leaf) 1 nyang each. Cut the above; for each 2 nyang, decoct 3 bowls of fermented millet water down to 2, remove the dregs, and wash the beard and hair. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibegam · Mobal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one entry in this section that is straightforwardly usable — a herbal rinse with nothing toxic in it, closer to a modern scalp treatment than anything else in the chapter. Mulberry root bark and arborvitae leaf are the working pair for scalp conditions, and the fermented millet water base is mildly acidic, which is the same principle behind an acidic final rinse in contemporary hair care. Note the dosing instruction: the whole batch is 8 nyang, but only 2 nyang is decocted at a time, so one preparation makes four washes. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
