Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肺胃虛弱, 氣促氣喘, 或吐唾血, 將成肺痿證. 紫菀茸二錢, 黃芪ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ甘草各一錢半, 人參ㆍ麥門冬各一錢, 當歸身六分, 五味子十五粒. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats vacuity and weakness of the lung and stomach, with hurried breath and panting, or the spitting of blood, about to become a pattern of wilting lung. Aster downy heads, 2 don; astragalus, white peony and licorice, 1 don 5 fun each; ginseng and ophiopogon, 1 don each; the body of the Chinese angelica root, 6 fun; schisandra, fifteen grains. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A supplementing formula with one expectorant in it. Astragalus, ginseng, peony and licorice are the frame of Dongwon's own 補中益氣 approach, and what is added is aster for the cough and ophiopogon and schisandra for the dryness; 當歸身, the body of the root rather than the head or tail, is specified because it is the part held to nourish rather than to move. 將成肺痿 — about to become wilting lung — places the formula before the illness rather than in it, which is why it is so mild. 氣促氣喘 in a patient with blood in the sputum is the state a modern clinician would investigate rather than tonify. **Haemoptysis requires chest imaging.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
