Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治室女月經不通, 臍下堅結, 大如盃升, 寒熱羸瘦, 若生肉瘕, 不可爲也. 乾漆(炒令烟盡)ㆍ牛膝(酒浸一宿) 各一兩六錢, 生地黃四兩八錢(取汁). 右銀石器內, 下地黃汁, 入二藥末, 漫火熬, 丸如梧子大. 酒下一二丸, 病去卽止. 《三因》

Translation

Treats menses not coming through in a maiden, with a hard binding below the navel as large as a cup or a seung measure, cold and heat, and emaciation. Should a flesh concretion form, nothing can be done. Dried lacquer (dry-fried until the smoke ceases) and achyranthes (wine-steeped overnight) 1 nyang 6 don each; fresh rehmannia 4 nyang 8 don, juice taken. In a silver or stone vessel put in the rehmannia juice, add the two powders, and reduce over a slow fire; form pills the size of a firmiana seed. Take one or two down with wine, and stop as soon as the disease goes. — Samin 三因 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three medicinals, one of them present as juice rather than powder, and the dose is one or two pills with an instruction to stop the moment it works. Dried lacquer is among the most forceful blood-breakers in the materia medica and achyranthes directs everything downward, so the restraint in the dosing is the formula's own caution. The clause 若生肉瘕, 不可爲也 — should a flesh concretion form, nothing can be done — is a prognostic limit stated flatly, and it belongs with the section at 1.18 on what cannot be treated. **Contains dried lacquer, which is a contact allergen and abortifacient.
