Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治婦人血蠱, 血瘕, 血積, 經候不通. 桃仁ㆍ大黃各一兩, 䖟蟲(炒) 五錢, 朴硝一兩. 右爲末, 先以醇醋一升二合, 銀石器中, 慢火煎取七合許, 下桃仁ㆍ大黃ㆍ䖟蟲末, 攪千下. 次下朴硝, 更熟攪, 良久出之, 丸如梧子, 前一日不吃晚飯, 五更初溫酒呑下五丸, 取下惡物, 如豆汁雞肝. 未下再服, 見鮮血卽止藥. 《千金》

Translation

Treats blood gu, blood concretion and blood accumulation in women, with the menses blocked and not coming down. Peach kernel and rhubarb 1 nyang each; tabanus (stir-fried) 5 don; mirabilite 1 nyang. Powder them; first take 1 seung 2 hop of strong vinegar in a silver or stone vessel and reduce over a low fire to about 7 hop, then add the peach kernel, rhubarb and tabanus powders and stir a thousand strokes. Next add the mirabilite, stir again until well done, and after a good while take it out and form pills the size of a firmiana seed. Eat no evening meal the day before; at the first watch before dawn take five pills down with warm wine. Foul matter should come away like bean juice or chicken liver. If it does not, take again; when fresh blood is seen, stop the medicine at once. — Cheongeum 千金 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Zhongjing's blood-breaking group at full strength — peach kernel, rhubarb, tabanus and mirabilite — with the vinegar reduction and a thousand strokes of stirring as the method. The stopping rule at the end is the important line and is unusually precise: foul matter like bean juice or chicken liver means it is working, but fresh blood means stop at once. That is a criterion for haemorrhage, stated in the terms available. **Contains tabanus and a strong purgative with mirabilite.
