Jugyeophwanggi-tang

한글 죽엽황기탕  ·  Pinyin Zhu Ye Huang Qi Tang

竹葉黃芪湯

The transcription writes 癕疽; the corpus prints 癰 and the corpus form is given above. The five slices of ginger are a count item and carry no gram figure. The leaf gives no processing for the pinellia. It carries no interlinear notes and no collation line.

Clinical commentary 臨床

The companion of 淸膻竹葉湯 and the broader of the two. Where that formula answers the thirst with cooling and fluid-generating drugs and a little Qi support, this one adds the blood: Danggui, Cheongung and fresh rehmannia at the front of the list, which turns it into a 四物湯 crossed with a 竹葉石膏湯. Bamboo leaf and fresh rehmannia carry the weight at a don and a half; everything else sits at seven and a half fun, with gypsum among them for the heat and pinellia and five slices of ginger to settle a stomach that is probably nauseated. The sub-section above gives the reading the formula is answering: 癰疽發渴乃氣血兩虛 — thirst breaking out in an abscess is a dual deficiency of Qi and blood — with 八物湯 plus astragalus, ophiopogon, cornus and schisandra offered for the same thing. That is not a heat diagnosis at all, and it tells us the thirst being described is the thirst of a depleted convalescent rather than of someone at the height of a fever. Read plainly, this is supportive care for a patient losing fluid and blood through a large open wound, and the clinical picture it describes — thirst, dry mouth, poor appetite, nausea — is real and still worth attending to. **Contains pinellia, which is acrid and toxic in the raw state; only correctly processed pinellia may be used, and the leaf does not say which.** Raw pinellia burns and swells the mouth and throat; the processed forms are the only ones that belong in a decoction. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
