Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治脚膝筋急痛. 大木瓜, 酒水相和, 煮令爛, 硏作膏, 熱裹痛處, 冷卽易, 一宿三五度便差. 《本草》

Translation

Treats tense sinews of leg and knee with pain. A large quince boiled soft in half wine and half water, ground to a paste and wrapped hot around the painful place; when it cools, change it. Three to five changes in a night and it mends. — Boncho 本草 (Donguibogam · Geun)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Quince is the sinew's medicinal in this tradition — the chapter's simples say 入肝故益筋, it enters the liver and so benefits the sinew — and here it is used as a hot poultice rather than swallowed. Changed as often as it cools, which is what makes it work: the heat is the treatment and the quince carries it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
