Cinnabar Wondrous Fragrance Powder

Jinsamyohyang-san

한글 진사묘향산  ·  Pinyin Chen Sha Miao Xiang San

辰砂妙香散

Finely powdered; 2 don stirred into warm wine — for one who does not drink, into a lotus-seed decoction. Note on modern practice: cinnabar is a mercury sulfide and musk is a protected animal product; both are omitted from contemporary preparations, and the herbal core carries the indication.

Translation

Treats Heart Qi insufficiency, with fright palpitations and fearful throbbing, abstraction and terror, grief and sorrow and wretchedness, joy and anger without constancy, and vacuity vexation with scant sleep. Dioscorea, white poria, hostwood poria, astragalus, and ginger-processed polygala, 1 nyang each; ginseng, platycodon, and licorice, 5 don each; cinnabar 3 don; aucklandia 2.5 don; musk 1 don. Powder finely; take 2 don stirred into warm wine — for one who does not drink wine, stirred into a lotus-seed decoction. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The indication is a mood description rather than a symptom list — terror and abstraction, grief, and *joy and anger without constancy*, which is as close as the classical vocabulary comes to naming emotional lability. The construction answers it by supplementing rather than sedating: dioscorea and two porias at the head, astragalus and polygala behind. The instruction for non-drinkers, taking it in lotus-seed broth instead of wine, is a small courtesy typical of this formulary. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
