Translation

Treats heat distension. Magnolia bark, bitter orange and platycodon 2 don each; rhubarb (steamed) and licorice (mix-fried) 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add 5 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Injae Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Changman)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Platycodon standing level with magnolia bark and bitter orange is what distinguishes this from the formula above. Platycodon opens the lung and lifts, so the formula works at both ends — opening above while purging below — where Chilmulhubak-tang works downward only. Steaming the rhubarb softens its action, which suits distension without urgent repletion. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
