Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治憂思傷脾肺, 心腹膨脹, 喘促, 胸滿, 腸鳴, 大小便不利, 脉虛緊而澁. 白朮二錢, 蘇子ㆍ人參各一錢, 大腹皮ㆍ草果ㆍ半夏ㆍ厚朴ㆍ木香ㆍ陳皮ㆍ枳殼ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 棗二枚, 水煎服. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats worry and excessive thought damaging spleen and lung, with distension of heart and abdomen, hasty panting, chest fullness, rumbling intestines, and stool and urine inhibited, the pulse vacuous, tight and rough. White atractylodes 2 don; perilla seed and ginseng 1 don each; areca husk, tsaoko, pinellia, magnolia bark, costus, tangerine peel, bitter orange and licorice 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Changman)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The aetiology is named before the signs: worry and excessive thought damaging spleen and lung. That pairing is standard — thought binds the spleen, worry binds the lung — and the formula answers both, with white atractylodes and ginseng for the spleen and perilla seed downbearing the lung. The pulse given, vacuous and tight and rough, is what separates this from the other general formulas.
