Donguibogam

Translation

Treats thirst coming after the vomiting; where a patient vomits and craves water to relieve it, give this at once. Polyporus, red poria and white atractylodes, equal parts. Grind to a powder and give 1 or 2 don each time, stirred into water. ○ There was a man who vomited two or three bowls of water at a time and whom no medicine helped; a single mouthful of newly drawn well water stopped it, and with this medicine he was cured. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three bland drugs and nothing else, given as a powder in water. The discrimination the chapter makes at 2.3 is the whole point: thirst before the vomiting calls for Jeokbokryeong-tang, thirst after it for this; and where water itself is vomited as soon as it is drunk, for Oryeong-san. The case at the end is worth reading twice. A man vomiting bowls of water whom nothing helped, stopped by one mouthful of cold well water — the observation is that in this state small sips of cold water are tolerated when anything else is not, which is still how such a patient is rehydrated by mouth. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
