Translation

Treats retching, vomiting and hiccup brought on by cold in the stomach. Astragalus, 2 don; evodia, Java cardamom, ginseng and black atractylodes, 1 don each; clove, bupleurum, cimicifuga, the body of Chinese angelica, tangerine peel and honey-roasted licorice, 5 fun each; phellodendron, 2 fun. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A Dongwon-style construction: astragalus leading, with bupleurum and cimicifuga to raise the sunken middle qi, and clove and evodia to warm the stomach and stop the counterflow. The two cold drugs at the end, phellodendron at 2 fun and nothing else, are the token restraint that marks this school — a trace of bitter cold so that the warming does not run away with itself. The indication is vomiting in a patient who is cold rather than obstructed, and the chapter places it with the cold-pattern formulas where the face is pale and the hands and feet cold. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
