Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治驚風痰搐. 天麻ㆍ白殭蚕ㆍ南星(炮) 各二錢, 蜈蚣一條, 白附子ㆍ防風ㆍ朱砂ㆍ全蝎各一錢, 麝香一字. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 每一丸, 薄荷湯化下. 《入門》

Translation

Treats fright wind with phlegm convulsion. Gastrodia, silkworm and arisaema (blast-fried), 2 don each; one centipede; typhonium, siler, cinnabar and scorpion, 1 don each; musk 1 ja. Powder them, bind with honey into pills the size of a paulownia seed, and give one at a time dissolved in mint decoction. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The wind-extinguishing shelf in its compact form: gastrodia, silkworm and blast-fried arisaema at 2 don, then a whole centipede, typhonium, siler, cinnabar and scorpion at 1 don, with a 1 ja trace of musk. One honey pill in mint decoction. **Contains whole centipede and whole scorpion. Both are venom-bearing animal drugs whose active content varies from specimen to specimen; scorpion venom is a neurotoxin, the dried material cannot be standardised, and the patient here is a child for whom the text gives no dose by weight anywhere. It also contains cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide, and arisaema, which is a severe mucosal irritant unless properly processed. This must not be prepared.** The musk is from a CITES Appendix I animal. What the formula is aimed at — 痰搐, the convulsion read as phlegm being thrown up into the channels — is the febrile seizure again, and it ends on its own. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
