Translation

Treats the shaoyin pattern with diarrhoea that will not stop; the lower burner should be treated, and this is appropriate. Halloysite and limonite, 2 don 5 fun each. Cut up and crush, and decoct in water. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two minerals and nothing else, for diarrhoea that has not answered to anything else. The reasoning is stated outright and is the entry's value: the lower burner should be treated — meaning the problem is no longer the cause but the failure to hold, and what is needed is not a warming or a draining drug but something that binds. Halloysite and limonite are both hydrated clays and both genuinely adsorbent and astringent, which puts this formula close to the kaolin preparations used for the same purpose into the twentieth century. One of the few mineral formulas in the book whose action is not in doubt. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
